The Bearded Collie is a wonderful breed. Those of us who have one (or several) appreciate their many wonderful qualities. But they are definitely not for everyone.
Consider the following:
Appearance: Beardies certainly are an attractive breed when they are well cared for. But imagine the amount of time it takes to keep them looking that way. Also think about the fact that they are dogs and no matter how hard you try to keep them looking good, a long coat. at the mercy of weather conditions, can be a challenge. Beardies are therefore not the best choice for someone who keeps an impeccable house or who likes white carpet.
Exercise: Are you an active person with enough free time to give an energetic Bearded Collie daily exercise? That could mean a brisk walk, frisbee, throwing a ball, etc. Or better yet, it could mean that you are interested in training your beardie to do agility, flyball, or herding. Either way, your Beardie needs frequent opportunities to get rid of all that energy they have stored up while you are busy with other things. If you don't have an hour a day to devote to exercising a Beardie, it would be best to choose a mellower breed.
Training: Bearded Collies are one of the cutest puppies imaginable (at least for me!) and it is very easy to let them do things they shouldn't because they are so darn appealing. It is important to begin training the day they come home to your house. Crate training is highly recommended and will prevent a lot of problems before they can start.
Socialization: Your beardie needs to be socialized throughout life and soon after his or her homecoming, it is important to start a kindergarten class at a local training school. Your Beardie needs to learn to sit, lie down, STAY, come when he is called, and remain calm while people approach him or her. They can be exciteably, overly friendly, and seemingly rude if they are not taught early and consistently what they can and cannot do at home and in public. If you want a dog that is calm by nature and needs little training, don't choose the Bearded Collie.
Environment: Beardies need space so they are not the best choice for apartment life. A fenced in yard is highly recommended. Beardies are social and need human companionship. They cannot be left outside while you are away from home. A bored Beardie can get into trouble and a poorly socialized Beardie can become fearful and unstable. When you have to be away, the best place for your Beardie is in your house, in a comfortable crate.
